The Best Places for a Kebab after the cricket in the UK.
There ain’t nothing better than a Kebab, yes there are some absolute honkers, but when it is just right it is quite simply the greatest meal on the planet - sweet juicy meat, fresh veg, piping hot chilli sauce and garlic sauce that’ll make your breath stink in a week’s time. Munners and I have been fortunate that our silly little TikTok channel has taken us around the country watching the great game we love. Being big hungry boys,we often finish a day's play in some of this country’s great late night dining institutions. It’s an unhealthy obsession, when we travelled to Amsterdam for England’s ODI tour of the Netherlands in 2022 we ended up scranning a chicken shwawma 4 out of the 5 nights… Here is a quick guide for you Cricket and Kebab lovers: Lord’s - Cafe Helen I first went to Lord’s in 2002, I was eight years old. Ajit Agarkar was going round the bins thanks to Nasser Hussain and my taste buds were more interested in monster munch. You’re spoilt for choice at Lord’s, but… you will have to do a bit of walking because you know, St John’s Wood, home of Sir Paul McCartney and some other rich folk, doesn’t have kebab shops. However, if you head right out of the Grace Gates you’ll soon be on the Edgware Road, which is quite possibly the best place in Britain to find a Kebab. Half way down Edgware Road lives Cafe Helen - get yourself in there - it’s open til 6am, so it doesn’t matter if you get side tracked by an icy cold larger on the way. Helen will still be there for you Old Trafford - Cafe Istanbul I was born and raised in Lancashire, and the cricket ground has always been a mecca for me. A happy place? I dunno. I played there once, got a duck and didn’t take a wicket. Decent… It’s changed loads since I first visited in 2001, when England took on Pakistan. I was sat in the middle of all the Pakistan fans with my old man, as Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis steamed in, fucking class. After play, get on the tram, get off at St Peter’s Square, make the short walk up to Bridge Street where you’ll find Cafe Istanbul - it shuts at 11, so not really viable for a day nighter but worth the visit nonetheless. Trent Bridge - Eva’s Grill Now then, Trent Bridge, a wonderful ground in a superb part of Nottingham, loads of great pubs, bars and restaurants all within range of an Alex Hales six. I spent three summers in Nottingham playing club cricket while I was at uni in nearby Loughborough. I lived across the road from Trent Bridge and like the student I was, I drank a load and ate a load. Eva’s Grill opposite the Trent Bridge Inn is sensational, get yourself in there after watching batters tee off towards the short boundary. Technically it is Gyros but tomato-tomato and all that. If you’re kicking on, or heading into the city centre the Lace Market Fish Bar does an Indian Style kebab in a Naan bread. Just saying…
